The Art of Renovations: Breathing New Life into Homes

Interior Designer - Robyn Monahan - Design Journal

I thrive on the excitement that comes with home renovations. Each project is unique, and each client is unique. Depending on the era in which the home was built and the specific desires of my client. The goal is always to infuse the home with modern luxuries and updates that reflect today's world.

I’m starting a Design Journal to show you some of these great transformations we do and we’ll update it often.

A Challenging Last-Minute Project

During the holidays over 10 years ago, this lovely couple had an urgent request to transform their home by February, when their baby was due. This was a big ask! The house had small, odd rooms downstairs. But I saw the vision the first time I walked in. They needed the home suitable for a newborn and a family lifestyle. Although I usually avoid taking on additional projects during such a busy time, But I felt compelled to help.

The first priority was installing the flooring in the master bedroom and throughout the upstairs bedrooms with the halls and stair well. I wanted to ensure the expectant mother had a comfortable space while my crew did construction right below her. And she was nestled away while all the work was being done.

In a matter of three months, we completed:

  • A new kitchen
  • A new dining room with custom-designed bar and china cabinet
  • A new desk to match the kitchen with hidden dog bowls
  • Removing a complete wall and installing the hidden beam in the ceiling just makes it look finer and like it’s always been this way
  • Flooring throughout the entire house
  • Stairwell with dark contrasting edges on the steps ( looked gorgeous and made it safe )
  • A new bathroom with beautiful damask faux wall treatment and
  • stunning vanity with hot fixtures
  • A darling baby’s room for their newborn, featuring an enchanting tree mural, pretty light pink puffy gauze drapes, and dreamy creamy white furniture
  • Gorgeous lighting fixtures throughout
  • Painting throughout

A significant part of the project involved removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, and I needed this done before installing the new flooring throughout the downstairs in every room. Convincing these clients to remove the wall was a struggle, they finally gave in, then they struggled with the support beam being hidden. For me it just looks like you removed a wall if you don’t hide the beam.

Success Amidst Chaos

Despite the chaotic conditions and tight timeline, I remained forthright with my design and completed the project. The result was a lovely and fun home filled with the wife's colorful furniture choices, ready to welcome their newborn and a house full of families and tons of children. It was a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience, showing that sometimes, even the most chaotic projects can turn out pretty fantastic.

I will always encourage clients to enjoy the design process, It’s exciting and rewarding for the family’s I work for and shouldn’t be rushed, something I will not be repeat, it’s not fun for me especially.
